Now that you have a colocation, you might want to know the various services that these providers can give you. Take note that some of the services are free while others are charge, depending on your contract with the provider.
Firewalls
Once a server is placed in a colocation facility, it is vulnerable and anyone can access it. For a secured system, providers use a firewall to restrict unauthorized access to the server. This service is often a paid add-on.
Backup MX of Mail Server
Companies running their own web server often host the mail for the domain as well. If the mail server goes down, the mail returns to sender. To prevent this from happening, a backup server can be set up by the colocatie. Its function is to spool mail until the server goes back online.
KVM Switch
There are situations when physical access to the box is required. To do this a mouse, keyboard, and monitor is needed to be connected to the hardware. This is typically done through a console connected to a KVM switch. This physical connection of the server and the KVM switch may or may not be included in the monthly fee per port.
Server Backups
Lastly, most providers offer server backup service that will store data to a centralized file system. This is a service by a colocation that would require extra payment added to your monthly bill.
